Always try to use your ring before ulting. In all seriousness, try to bait out their beads with your sash, then ult them later while they are down. Even if you miss it, at least it shows you got balls. DB can be very enticing and is probably something worth building eventually, but going Brawler's, then finishing cooldowns, and then getting crit online is a much smoother build up and still effective. Brawler's still does a lot of damage, gives extra pen, and can be activated by just about everything.
